
Sir William Preece KCB, FRS. lived from 1834 – 1913 and was a communications expert, bringing the telephone to this country and helping Marconi to bring Radio to the world. He was another of the notable signatories to the Alfred Markby Memorial.
He became chief engineer to the Post Office and, having watched waves ripple across the surface of the water concluded that sound must travel in the same way.
He brought the first telephones to Britain in 1877 and the system was demonstrated to Queen Victoria a year later.
He was president of the I.E.E. in 1893
